The 2005 Ericsson TP2 Sailing Shorts Story

The Volvo Ocean Race was one of the world's most prestigious offshore sailing competitions, bringing together elite international crews to race around the globe through some of the most demanding conditions at sea.

First established in 1973 as the Whitbread Round the World Race, the event became the Volvo Ocean Race in 2001, marking a new chapter in its history. Racing across multiple ocean legs, crews faced extreme weather, powerful Southern Ocean seas and months of intense competition.

The race became a proving ground for advances in yacht design, navigation and technical sailing equipment, with Henri-Lloyd closely associated with its offshore racing heritage.

First held in 1973 as the Whitbread Round the World Race, the competition was renamed the Volvo Ocean Race in 2001 and continued under that name until 2019, when it became The Ocean Race.

Over five decades, it has evolved from an ambitious adventure into one of sailing's most demanding professional competitions, pushing the boundaries of yacht design, technology and human endurance. The 2008–09 edition was particularly significant, with the introduction of the powerful Volvo Open 70 yachts' second generation and a demanding route spanning approximately 37,000 nautical miles. Ericsson 4, skippered by Torben Grael, claimed overall victory, cementing the team's place in the history of offshore racing.
