An original Henri-Lloyd sailing gilet produced for the Swedish Match Global Team during the 1997–98 Whitbread Round the World Race, reflecting the brand's longstanding involvement in competitive offshore sailing.

The 1997–98 edition marked the final race under the Whitbread name, bringing 25 years of round-the-world racing to a close before its transition to the Volvo Ocean Race. Ten international teams departed Southampton in September 1997, competing across nine demanding legs. Among them was Swedish Match, skippered by Gunnar Krantz, which secured third place overall behind EF Language and Merit Cup.

Constructed with a nylon outer face featuring a Hydrophile polyurethane coating and a 100% polyester lining, the gilet combines practical warmth with distinctive team detailing. Finished in navy with contrasting orange shoulders and collar, it features original Swedish Match Global Team branding, Henri-Lloyd GORE-TEX insignia and personalised embroidery identifying crew member Denise Norman.

The 1997 Swedish Match Global Team Sailing Gilet Story

The 1997–1998 Whitbread Round the World Race marked the final edition of the legendary competition under the Whitbread name, bringing to a close 25 years of round-the-world racing before its transition to the Volvo Ocean Race.

Beginning in Southampton in September 1997, ten international teams set out on a demanding circumnavigation, competing across nine legs through the Atlantic, Southern Ocean and Pacific.

The race introduced the Whitbread 60 as the sole racing class, bringing a new level of competition to the fleet. Among the contenders was Swedish Match, skippered by Swedish sailor Gunnar Krantz. Competing against some of the world's most accomplished offshore crews, the team secured third place overall, behind race winner EF Language, skippered by Paul Cayard, and second-placed Merit Cup.

The campaign represented an important chapter in Scandinavian offshore sailing and Henri-Lloyd's involvement in one of the sport's most demanding international competitions.
