The 2001 Volvo Ocean Race Jib Jacket - Marine Blue Story

The 2001–2002 Volvo Ocean Race marked a defining chapter in offshore sailing, becoming the first edition under the Volvo name following nearly three decades as the Whitbread Round the World Race.

Beginning in Southampton on 23 September 2001, eight international teams embarked on a 32,250-nautical-mile circumnavigation, racing across nine legs through some of the world's most demanding ocean conditions. Competing aboard 60-foot Volvo Ocean 60 yachts, crews faced the relentless seas of the Southern Ocean, unpredictable weather and months of intense competition.

The race concluded in Kiel, Germany, on 9 June 2002, with illbruck Challenge, skippered by American sailor John Kostecki, claiming overall victory. The edition marked the end of the Volvo Ocean 60 era and the beginning of a new chapter in the history of round-the-world racing.
