CARING FOR YOUR KNIT

Wool has gained a reputation for being notoriously challenging to clean. Many of us have experienced the distress of our beloved sweater shrinking. In this guide, we aim to provide you with the essential knowledge of caring for wool garments, including effective hand washing techniques and tips to prevent pilling. By following these instructions, you'll be able to maintain the pristine condition of your knitwear, ensuring it looks newer, smells fresher, and remains wearable for an extended period.

HAND WASHING

Properly washing your woollen garments is paramount to their care and longevity. Although using the woollen or delicates setting on your washing machine is acceptable, the optimal approach is handwashing, as it minimises potential damage to the delicate fibres.

STEP 1

Prepare your sink or a bucket by filling it with warm water, ensuring it is not too hot. To create a suitable cleaning solution, add 2-3 capfuls of pH-neutral detergent to the water.

STEP 2

To begin, turn your garment inside-out and carefully immerse it in the water. Take care to avoid excessive agitation, as this can potentially alter the shape of the garment.

STEP 3

Allow the garment to soak for a period of up to 30 minutes.

STEP 4

After the soaking period, thoroughly rinse the garment with cold water to remove any traces of detergent. Take caution not to stretch or strain the yarn while rinsing.

STEP 5

Gently blot the garment with a towel to remove any excess water, being careful not to wring or twist it. Afterward, lay the garment flat to dry.

In order to minimise strain on the fabric, it is advisable to avoid frequent washing of your knitwear. To extend the time between washes, you can use a steamer to effectively eliminate any bacteria present in the garment.
