Sail and Ski: From Sea to Summit in Norway’s Fjords

From Sea to Summit in Kjerringøy, Norway.

There are few adventures as pure, demanding, and exhilarating as sail and ski. It’s a pursuit that unites two worlds: the raw power of the ocean and the silence of untouched mountain snow. By harnessing the wind, sailors voyage deep into Norwegian fjords and remote Arctic coastlines, where the sea meets towering peaks. There, sails give way to skis, and exploration continues upward.

What is Sail and Ski?

At its core, sail and ski is about freedom of movement across two elements, sea and mountain. Sailors navigate into remote winter landscapes, often places unreachable by road, carrying their skis on board. Once anchored, the adventure shifts from deck to slope. It’s a seamless transition from trimming sails to carving lines through snow, embodying the ultimate spirit of self-reliant exploration.

This discipline isn’t just about sport; it’s about connection. The sea provides access to landscapes rarely touched, while the mountains deliver the reward of solitude, challenge, and perspective. Together, they create a rhythm of adventure unlike anything else.

Norway: The Heart of Sail and Ski

Nowhere embodies ski sailing quite like Norway. With mountains plunging directly into deep fjords, the country offers a natural playground for those seeking both sailing and skiing in the same journey.

  • Sunnmøre Alps: Dramatic ridgelines and couloirs that drop almost into the fjords. From the deck of a yacht, it’s possible to skin up untouched peaks and descend back to the water in a single day.
  • Lofoten Islands : A dreamscape of jagged peaks above turquoise waters. Its raw beauty and Arctic light have made it a bucket-list destination for ski sailors worldwide.
  • Lyngen Alps (Troms region): Famous for long descents, wide glaciers, and views across the Arctic Ocean. Remote and wild, it demands true expedition spirit.
  • Hardangerfjord: One of Norway’s largest fjords, offering a slightly milder climate but the same dramatic contrast of sea and snow.

Each region combines sailing heritage with mountaineering challenge, offering experiences as demanding as they are rewarding.

Autumn Winter 25 – Behind the Scenes

For our Autumn Winter 25 campaign, we headed to Kjerringøy in Northern Norway - a remote outpost where the sea shapes everything. Shooting on boats, high in the mountains, and along rugged shoreline, we put the Henri Lloyd AW25 collection to the test in the very conditions it was designed for. Real weather, real challenges, real performance.

We were guided by Elfri, a family-run business in Kjerringøy. Sture and his family shared their knowledge of the fjords, the best routes, and the rhythms of life lived between sea and summit, grounding the campaign in local insight and authenticity.

Amid this dramatic backdrop, the AW25 collection came into its own. The gear stood out in vivid contrast to the rugged landscape, while its technical performance complemented the elements it was built for. Spray, snow, wind, and shifting light put every layer to the test, proving the collection’s ability to perform where sea meets mountain.

From Sea Spray to Snowfall

Sail and ski is more than a sport; it’s a philosophy of exploration. It reminds us that the boundaries between elements are only as fixed as we make them. The sea carries you to the foot of the mountain; your own spirit carries you to the summit.

And that’s why Norway, with its wild fjords and iconic alpine landscapes, became the natural stage for our Sea to Summit story.
