Charting a Cleaner Course: C0 DWR Technology and Our Oceans
Annie Whittaker
At Henri-Lloyd, our heritage is rooted in the sea – it’s both our testing ground and our greatest responsibility. That’s why we’re proud to embrace the shift to C0 Durable Water Repellent (DWR) technology, a groundbreaking advancement in performance apparel that eliminates harmful fluorocarbons (PFCs) from the production process.
For decades, traditional DWR finishes relied on long-chain fluorocarbons (C6/C8/C10) that were incredibly effective at repelling water – but they came at a cost. These persistent chemicals didn’t break down in the environment, finding their way into rivers, oceans, and ultimately the marine life we treasure and depend on. The transition to C0 DWR means a significant reduction in these pollutants, helping to safeguard fragile marine ecosystems from invisible, long-lasting contaminants as unlike its predecessors, C0 doesn’t leave behind invisible traces that harm our oceans.
What makes C0 DWR so exciting is that it delivers the protection and performance sailors expect – water rolls off without compromising breathability or durability – while also aligning with a future where innovation and environmental stewardship go hand in hand.
To ensure you keep this technology performing at its very best, C0 garments do need a little more mindful care, regular rinsing to remove salt and dirt, and occasional reproofing when water no longer beads on the surface. At Henri-Lloyd we don’t see this as a limitation, but part of a new, more sustainable approach to technical gear. By maintaining your kit, you’re not just extending its life and keeping it working like new, you’re also ensuring the positive environmental benefits of C0 endure.
As sailors, adventurers, and ocean lovers, we know that every decision we make has a ripple effect. By choosing C0 DWR – and caring for it responsibly – we’re protecting the performance you rely on whilst also helping ensure cleaner waters, healthier marine life, and a more sustainable future for generations to come. Together, we’re not just navigating seas – we’re protecting them.
