JOG (Junior Offshore Group) Yacht Racing is thriving, with a 24% rise in membership and 30% more race entries in 2024. The success of Generation JOG, a youth-focused initiative supported by Henri-Lloyd, is driving this growth by making sailing more accessible. The program has boosted both youth and female participation, with impressive results from all-youth teams like SailFish, signalling a bright future for the sport.
Key to this success is Generation JOG, a forward-thinking initiative designed to bring new energy and fresh faces into yacht racing. Supported by Henri-Lloyd as its technical clothing partner, the program has transformed the landscape of offshore sailing.
Henri-Lloyd has been a steadfast supporter of Generation JOG for four years, offering prizes for race wins and notable milestones, sponsoring one race weekend each season, and supplying vouchers for technical clothing. These contributions have not only enhanced the racing experience but also removed significant barriers to entry for younger sailors.
Oli Hawkins, skipper of SailFish and winner of Yacht of the Year and the Generation JOG Youth Challenge Trophy, shared the impact of Henri-Lloyd’s support: “SailFish is exclusively skippered and crewed by Generation JOG members, all aged 23 or below. Without Henri-Lloyd’s sponsorship, we couldn’t afford our crew kit. Team kit fosters pride and unity, which is crucial for a cohesive and successful team.” Using their Henri-Lloyd vouchers, the SailFish crew equipped themselves with technical jackets, ensuring comfort and performance on the water.
JOG’s progress is striking. Stuart Lawrence, representing the club, noted that in 2019, the club had 481 crew members, only 9% of whom were under 30. In 2024, over 1,300 crew members participated, with 25% aged under 30. “Our younger teams have truly shone this year. Boats like SailFish and Spectrum, operating on limited budgets with all-youth crews, achieved outstanding results,” he said.
Beyond attracting younger sailors, Generation JOG has also increased female participation, with 35% of crew members being women—a figure that surpasses the norm for offshore racing. This inclusive spirit is part of what makes JOG such a dynamic force in the sailing community
Henri-Lloyd’s involvement goes beyond sponsorship. Ross Partridge, Corporate Sales Manager, expressed the brand’s commitment: “At Henri-Lloyd, we aim to ensure everyone has the best days of their life on the water. Staying warm, dry, and comfortable is essential to that enjoyment. Supporting JOG aligns perfectly with our values, and it’s fantastic to see our support making a tangible difference.”
Founded in the 1950s, JOG has always championed smaller yachts and friendly competition in coastal and offshore racing. Today, it stands as a beacon for innovation, inclusivity, and the future of the sport. With initiatives like Generation JOG and partners like Henri-Lloyd, JOG is ensuring that the tide of participation continues to rise.
